Hot Topic: Don't Treat Girls Like Princesses

I stumbled upon this gem of a Facebook page, which has 3.5 million likes, most of whom are probably entitled teenage girls who obviously think that they deserve the world and more. It's safe to say that I do not agree with the idea that the boys have to treat the girls like princesses. Now, I've heard my friends say things like, "find a guy that treats you like a queen," and they actually stick by that rule. They receive expensive gifts showered by their boyfriends every month, and they believe that anything less than that is a cardinal sin in Relationship World.

Let's get to it:

"You are not special. You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else." - Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club

Even though I was literally named after Princess Jasmine, I believe that girls don't have the right or the merit to be treated like a princess. It is this idea that girls are fragile and in need of constant affection 24/7 in order to be kept in line and happy. We are not dogs. You should not have to give us a treat every now and then to stop us from yapping, and the sooner boys learn to treat women like less of a snowflake, the more girls will realize they aren't.

I'm not saying that women should be treated like trash, just that they shouldn't be glorified and put on a pedestal and showered with confetti and fragipani petals. Men are just as fragile, sensitive, loving, and emotional as women are. It's just that society dictates men to hold it in, to 'man up', and 'grow a pair', so they seem to be less high maintenance than girls, who have the green light to cry and thrash around in anger any day of the week.

Because girls are allowed to express their emotions externally, this gives them the chance to complain about their 'mistreatment'. He doesn't do this, he doesn't do that, he doesn't say this or that. Us girl friends would listen in compassion and fluff her up even more. You deserve better, you need to find a man that appreciates you! Yes, sadly, I have been caught saying those cliched words, but I use it sparingly, and only when I truly believe that person deserves more than their cheating partner.

But after listening to the endless stream of complaints from my friends about the things their boyfriends don't do, it paints a pretty clear picture that some girls have a god complex. They believe they are entitled to the best and more, and I'm not saying guys don't have this complex too, but in the world of teenage relationships, trust me, girls want way too much.

Thinking that you deserve a guy who is this and that just gives you the perception that men are mere companions to fluff you up and caress your already inflated ego. You are a woman whose needs do not come before your man. You are a woman who is of equal importance in a relationship. You have needs and he has needs, but both of you should work together to give each other the best. Thinking that you are the princess and he is the street rat is an extremely rude thing to do. We all deserve someone who loves us, but just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to, doesn't mean they don't love you with everything they have.

For boyfriends, you can shower your girlfriends with gifts if you want to. But remember that you are not a credit card and she is not a slot machine for you to put Nice Coins in just to keep her in check. You don't need to text her everyday and call her at 2am to tell her you miss her. No need to buy a bouquet of flowers and show up at her doorstep in the pouring rain. You can, if you want to, but you shouldn't find it necessary in order to please your girlfriend who's probably watched way too many Nicholas Sparks films. Remember that you, just like her, should be treated equally as kind. You are not the Aladdin to her Jasmine. You don't need to show her the world on a magic carpet ride and impress her with your genie. You are a man. She is a woman. She is not a princess. You are not a street rat nor a prince.

A patriarchal society has made it seem like the man is always in charge of both the relationship and their woman. The marital position of a man who brings home the bacon and takes care of the woman has trickled down to modern day teenage relationships. Now, 14 year-old girls feel entitled to receive gifts and love from their 14 year-old boyfriends. This gives the notion that girls don't have to work in the relationship. Their man has to provide everything, including constant emotional support. That's not how it works, sweetie pie. And if for the rest of your life, you believe that you can lounge around on the couch, crying, whilst your man consoles you after his hard day at work, then you're going to be very disappointed. If you expect the world, you better give your boyfriend the same.

A relationship is a two way street, not a highway and a bike path. Either one of you shouldn't go out of your way to make the other happy just because society deems it 'gentlemanly' to give her flowers everyday and 'womanly' to give him a blowjob every afternoon. For the boyfriends, the more you do this, the more you ingrain in your girlfriend's mind that she is the most important thing in the world. We need to learn our place, and if you make us feel like a snowflake, we will demand and expect more than we deserve.

To all you boyfriends; you are not there as a punching bag for us to unload all our dramatic crap on your doorstep, and you shouldn't take it just because you feel that it's your role as a 'good' boyfriend to put up with our bullshit. If we're being a bitch, tell us. Pull us back to reality. The girls who can't take criticism and a little bit of tough love are the ones who need it the most. And for the girls, stop being so self-entitled. If you want your boyfriend to treat you like a queen you better treat him like a king.
