Hot Topic: Homophobia

I don't like homophobes. Their attitude sets something off in me. Every time I meet a homophobe, no matter how much I want to leave them to their own devices, I physically cannot. It's as if I have to become a temporary ambassador for the LGBT community. I will question their beliefs and put them under the spotlight. Granted, I may come across as rude or annoying, but like I said, there's something inside me that cannot accept intolerance and ignorance. In the words of a fake Morgan Freeman twitter account, "It's not a phobia. You are not scared; you are an asshole."

Let's get to it:

Most homophobes are religious. I have yet to see an atheist with such visceral contempt towards a homosexual. That's because misinterpreted religious teachings written over 4,000 years ago have made some people into angry little monsters and they think their hatred is justified and encouraged. Obviously those who believe that the hatred of God's creation is God's will have absolutely no idea about the concept of unconditional love.

It's very interesting meeting a homophobic person, because their own emotions are ineffable. Ask them why they hate the gays, and they would mutter something along the lines of, "the bible says it's wrong." That's all they have to support their hatred. You know what else the Bible says is wrong? Eating shellfish, wearing garments of different fabrics, working on Sundays, tattoos and shaving your beard. But wait, those are in the Old Testament! Jesus came down and eradicated all those! They don't matter anymore...right? But remember that Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished."

Although if you still want to play the New Testament game, here are several New Testament laws; women should be submissive and should never speak in church, women should not have authority over men, women should cover their heads, oh and don't forget slavery. Yep.

So why is it that homophobes are so fixated on the concept of homosexuals and not any of these things? I'm sorry, am I missing something? You cannot pick and choose what you want to follow in the Bible. This isn't an all you can eat buffet. You can't just take the verses about homophobia and parade it around, discarding the fact that there are plenty of other verses that you yourself are breaking. It's unbelievable the amount of people who don't even read their own bibles.

Being homophobic and banning gay marriage is like going on a diet and not letting the table next to you order any dessert. How would you feel if someone judged you and hated you for the private things you do with your partner? Exactly. Because it's none of their business. Who you love and who you make love to should be between you and another consenting adult.

One of the most irritating things about homophobes is how they think that all gays are ready to have sex with them. Seriously? If you're ugly, you're ugly. Don't think that just because girls don't like you that suddenly guys will. Honestly though, don't flatter yourselves, o ye homophobes. Just like how you're not attracted to everyone of the opposite sex, the gays aren't attractive to y'all either.

Homophobes are so focused on the act of homosexuality itselfthe nitty gritty and the dirty bitsthat they forget the one thing that the gays actually do most; love. Homophobes forget that the gays actually do have strong and loving emotional relationships with each other. You don't fall in love with people's genitals, you fall in love with people's souls. Let's be honest, both the penis and the vagina are not particularly attractive, and the marriage vows that gay people take are just as emotionally-driven as any straight couple. Being gay does not mean fucking a hundred times more than a straight person. It all depends. Just remember that being gay is not about having sex, it's about being in love, and love is beautiful.

"What's unnatural is homophobia. Homo sapiens is the only species in all of nature that responds with hate to homosexuality." -Alex Sanchez
