What can you do with a degree in the history of art? Whilst some might scoff and make the ol' condescending 'I'd like fries with that' joke, Matthew Simmonds triumphantly uses his degree to restore important and historic monuments such as the Westminster Abbey and the Ely Cathedral. Not only that, during the mid-90's he began specializing in the carving of fine classical sculpture in marble, which were exhibited in Italy, China and the USA. "To create a sculpture that catches the light and structure of a
building and lets the eye wander, to feel that here my eye could live,
here a part of me could stay, is a great achievement," writes Simmonds. "The sculptures
give the viewer a different perspective on space. They look different
from every viewpoint. You long to be in them, and they seem almost more
meaningful for that."
